The HECToR Service is now closed and has been superceded by ARCHER.

HECToR to be part of DEISA: 11th March 2008

The DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications) Grid of supercomputers is unique within Europe. DEISA is a structured layer on top of the national supercomputing services, which it has tightly coupled with a dedicated network supported by innovative system and Grid software. Users can now run simulations which, without DEISA, would not have been feasible.

In May 2008, HECToR will begin to contribute to the shared pool of resources operated jointly by the DEISA partners. The consortium currently contains eleven supercomputing centres in seven countries (UK, France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Netherlands and Spain) and contains most of the major HPC systems in Europe.

Access to the DEISA resources is primarily reserved for projects that have been successful in applying to the DEISA Extreme Computing Initiative (DECI), but a new Virtual Community Support will be announced in May, 2008. This gives an opportunity for researchers to gain access to substantial amounts of computing time on a wide range of different machines.
