Introduction to HECToR

Description: This course gives a general overview of the hardware, software and configuration of the HECToR systems. We will cover the key features of the Cray XE6, including the various compilers, tools and libraries that comprise the programming enviroment, as well as the specific configuration of the queues and file systems for HECToR users. We also give details of how users can obtain help when working on the systems, including documentation, the helpdesk and training.

Aimed at: All those who want to use the HECToR service.

Prerequisites: Attendees should have some serial (but ideally parallel) programming skills in Fortran or C in a UNIX environment. For instance, one should be able to: connect to a machine remotely (e.g. using ssh), use basic UNIX commands, edit a source file, and understand the elementary steps in compiling object files and creating executables.

Duration: 1 day.

After Course Attendees Will: Be familiar with the HECToR hardware, software and configuration. Have knowledge of the various software packages available and where/how to get further information and help.
