Fusion Energy
Fusion energy power offers the potential for cheap, clean and safe power in the 21st Century. Magnetic confinement fusion technologies trap an extremely hot plasma of hydrogen isotopes using magnetic fields. HECToR allows scientists to study important phenomena like turbulence in the plasma that disrupts the fusion reaction. These simulations depend upon the immense computational capacity available. The Cray Centre of Excellence will be working with Fusion scientists from the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy to run these codes efficiently at the largest scales.
