Bringing a Laptop to a course at a NAG Office

Attendees at courses run in the NAG offices will need to bring a laptop. This should have full wireless capability and be able to connect to the Internet (a wireless secure key and access will be provided on most courses). You will need appropriate software to connect to a Linux system via a secure shell (ssh) connection and an X server is recommended.

Typical laptops using the MS Windows operating system can use PuTTY for ssh connections to a remote Linux system. Some courses will need an X client so the laptop will need an X server such as xming, CygWin/X (both of which are free), Hummingbird/Exceed or similar. This is so that client programs can be displayed on the laptop screen.

A laptop that has been configured to use a GNU/Linux OS will typically have analogous programs available but please check this before arriving for the course.

If you cannot bring a suitable laptop NAG will endeavour to provide an appropriate machine, but numbers are limited. If you have any questions please contact us.
